A. When You Are Talking
- Have something to say
- Use words understandable
- Repeat statement for clarification
- Use listener name or “You”
- Answer question frankly when possible
- Show a sense of humor without offending
- Give/encourage a listener a change to talk
- Maintain eye contact, use a pleasant tone of voice
- Speak at moderate rate, be sincere and natural
- Think of listener’s interests and concern
- Be interesting
B. When The Other Talking
- Be a good listener

- Use verbal reinforces like “YES” or “I AGREE”
- Don’t judge the speaker through verbal or non verbal responses
- Occasionally nod head in approval
- Have Pleasant facial expression
